Design & Build Quality
At first glance, the Roborock Qrevo S Pro and Dreame L40 Ultra Gen 2 look like they came from the same design brief. Both are low, round robots with a raised navigation module on top, a front-facing sensor array, rotating mop pads underneath and a large multifunction dock waiting nearby. Neither tries to look futuristic in like some early models. Instead, both have settled into a fairly mature appliance aesthetic: neutral colors, smooth surfaces, concealed mechanisms and as few exposed moving parts as possible.
That’s actually a good thing. A robot vacuum spends most of its life on the floor, where it meets dust, hair, crumbs, water, and objects that don’t belong. A complicated-looking design might photograph well, but what matters in practice is if it feels solid, and if parts are easy to get to, and can its exterior handle years of bumps and dirty conditions.
Both do well in this area, but they’ve different approaches.
The Qrevo S Pro seems like a refined version of a proven formula. The L40 Ultra Gen 2 is more ambitious, with Dreame putting more mechanical complexity into the actual cleaning system. Neither is better by default, but it kind of matters when thinking about owning one long-term.
This robot
The Qrevo S Pro is compact, measuring roughly 13.8 inches across and only about 3.8 inches high. The Dreame is similar in size. That similarity is useful because both can reach beneath furniture that would be inaccessible to a traditional upright vacuum.
The low profile is one of those characteristics that’s easy to overlook when shopping but becomes extremely valuable once you own the machine. Sofas, beds, cabinets and some TV units create large areas where dust can accumulate but where getting a conventional vacuum cleaner underneath can be awkward. A robot can just go under and clean it.
The circular shape is still a good choice. It can rotate in place, navigate around chair legs and approach walls without worrying about corners of its own chassis becoming caught. That’s why most premium robots are still shaped like this.
The Qrevo S Pro’s top is simple. A LiDAR turret is in the center, and it has few physical controls. That’s what I’d want. There isn’t much reason to interact with the robot itself when most of the meaningful controls are handled through the app.
The L40 Ultra Gen 2 does the same. It has a navigation turret and a clean top, with the important cleaning technology hidden underneath and around the sides. From far away, you can’t tell the Dreame is more complex.
That’s an achievement.
The L40 has parts that move to extend the mop and brush, but it doesn’t look like it has weak points. The engineering is hidden until it’s cleaning.
Materials and perceived quality
Both feel solid.
They’re mostly plastic, since they need to be light and move around. Metal wouldn’t make sense. It would add weight without providing a meaningful benefit for most of the robot’s structure.
What matters is how the plastic is put together.
Both feel like premium appliances. This panels won’t flex when bumped, and parts come apart easily for maintenance.
That’s particularly important because robot vacuum ownership involves more interaction than the marketing photographs suggest.
You’ll remove the brush.
You’ll clean the wheels.
You’ll take out the mop pads.
You’ll empty or replace dock parts.
You’ll probably remove the filter.
You’ll wipe the sensors clean.
A robot that’s hard to take apart isn’t well-designed.
The Qrevo S Pro’s simple design helps. Roborock didn’t reinvent everything. The all-rubber brush is easy to inspect and clean. Hair can still build up, but no bristles makes it less of a problem.
The Dreame is also well engineered, but its complex cleaning system means more is happening underneath. The hair management system and extending parts are useful, but they also mean there are more areas where hair and debris can potentially collect.
That’s the trade.
More engineering can help, but it can also mean more maintenance.
What’s underneath is actually more important than what’s on top
What pretty matters most with robot vacuum build quality is the underside, which is considerably more important than the exterior.
A product photograph often shows the top cover, finish and shape, but it’s the robot’s underside that really matters for surviving everyday cleaning. That underside is what determines its durability in this regard.
Machines like these typically include a main brush, side brush, and drive wheels, along with a caster wheel, charging contacts, and mop assemblies, all fitted into a compact space.
Components are exposed to dirt all the time.
That main roller handles hair and larger debris. Furniture and walls push against the side brush. Dust and dirt are collected by the vacuum and then the wheels travel through it. Mop assemblies work in wet conditions. Dust and moisture also affect the charging contacts over time.
Reassurance comes from the Qrevo S Pro’s design. The core layout is recognizable and relatively easy to understand, which Roborock has kept.
Underneath, the Dreame has more to offer. It’s designed to address a real issue with circular robot vacuums, with an extending mop and side-brush mechanisms, but a moving part will always have more potential failures than a stationary one.
That’s not a reason for me to avoid the Dreame, it’s just something I’d think about when considering long-term maintenance.
Docks tell a different tale now
A robot is only half of the product.
Dock engineering is pretty impressive.
These machines have turned a basic charging station into a compact cleaning device. They don’t just charge the battery; the dock also empties the robot’s dustbin, and it cleans, dries the mop pads, and handles water, both clean and dirty.
This represents a huge step forward for usability.
It’s the physical size that’s a problem.
These docks are too large to be discreetly placed in a corner. Essentially, you’re setting up a small appliance that will be a permanent fixture beside a wall.
The Qrevo S Pro dock looks clean and vertical. This dock houses the clean-water and dirty-water tanks, a dust collection system, and mop-cleaning components in a pretty straightforward way.
I like this type of design because it’s straightforward. You can tell what needs to be done. Water tanks have to be removed, and dust bags need replacement. That wash area also needs cleaning from time to time. These tasks are pretty basic.
The dock of the L40 Ultra Gen 2 is substantial, and its focus is on automated maintenance, with a washboard and cleaning system that help keep the docking station cleaner, reducing the need for manual cleaning.
A mop-washing robot creates a peculiar ownership problem; it’s cleaning your floor and getting dirty at the same time.
Both problems need to be addressed by a good dock.
Dreame’s dock makes a strong attempt at this as well.
Water management and materials
Once you add mopping, build quality becomes more complicated.
A vacuum cleaner can tolerate dust almost everywhere except the motor and electronics.
Robot mops deal with water. So water tanks, seals, pumps, drainage systems, and dock basins matter.
Both the Qrevo S Pro and L40 Ultra Gen 2 are designed around removable clean- and dirty-water tanks. This is much more convenient than connecting the dock directly to household plumbing, because you can install either machine without modifying the room.
But you’ll need to carry water around periodically.
The clean tank gets heavy when it’s full.
The dirty tank gets unpleasant when it fills.
That’s simply part of owning a robot with an automatic mopping system.
The quality of the tank handles and seals therefore basically matters more than it might initially appear. A loose tank would be irritating.
Both designs are reasonably well thought out in this respect.
Durability versus complexity
The difference between the two machines is:
Roborock is about simplicity, and Dreame is about eliminating limitations.
The Qrevo S Pro doesn’t need a complicated mechanism to extend the mop. It uses a dual-mop arrangement and good navigation instead.
The Dreame asks why circular robots should be limited.
The answer is an extending mop and side brush.
This gives the L40 Ultra Gen 2 a cleaning advantage around walls and corners, but also makes it more complicated.
But that doesn’t change my quality verdict. They both feel premium.
But it changes my expectations over five years.
Roborock’s simpler design gives me more confidence mechanically. There are fewer unusual mechanisms to worry about.
The Dreame argues the extra complexity is worth it because it cleans better.
Size and furniture clearance
The similar height of the two robots is another advantage. At around 3.8 inches tall, both can fit beneath many beds and sofas.
But owners should measure, not assume.
Furniture clearance can be surprisingly inconsistent. A sofa might have space at one end, but not at the other. The navigation turret also means the robot needs more clearance than its lowest body height alone might suggest.
The good news is they’re not too tall by modern standards.
Both are designed to be left alone for long periods rather than constantly retrieved from under furniture.
I would give the Roborock Qrevo S Pro a small advantage if I were judging only construction simplicity and long-term serviceability.
It feels like a mature design. This materials are appropriate, the robot is solid without being unnecessarily heavy, the underside is sensibly laid out and the dock doesn’t appear to be trying to solve problems through unnecessary complexity.
The Dreame L40 Ultra Gen 2 is more interesting.
Its design acknowledges that robot vacuums still have fundamental physical limitations around edges and corners, then attempts to solve those limitations mechanically. The extending mop and side brush aren’t just decorative. They change what it can reach.

The L40 Ultra Gen 2 feels like someone looked at that formula and asked, “What if we fixed some of the things robot vacuums still aren’t very good at?”
That makes the Dreame more impressive, but the Roborock is easier to trust.
Navigation Intelligence & Mapping
Navigation is one of those areas where robot vacuum specifications can be misleading. Suction power is easy to advertise with a single number. Navigation is much harder to summarize. A robot with many sensors can still make frustrating decisions, miss parts of a room, bump into furniture, or get confused by lighting. And floor objects.
The Roborock Qrevo S Pro and Dreame L40 Ultra Gen 2 are premium navigation robots. Neither uses the old random-bounce approach, which was entertaining but inefficient. Both use LiDAR mapping, route planning, and obstacle detection to understand the home.
The interesting question isn’t whether either robot can navigate.
Both can navigate.
The question is which one makes better decisions in an imperfect home.
LiDAR is a major advantage for both robots
These machines are really different from cheap robot vacuums.
Both use LiDAR/LDS to map their surroundings. A laser-based navigation system can scan the environment around the robot and establish distances to walls, furniture and other objects. Rather than repeatedly discovering the same room through trial and error, the robot can build a map and use that information to plan its route.
This is useful on the first run.
Instead of simply setting the robot loose and hoping it eventually covers everything, the Qrevo S Pro can create a representation of the floor plan and then use it to divide the home into rooms and cleaning areas.
The Dreame L40 Ultra Gen 2 works similarly. The Pathfinder system combines LiDAR mapping and route planning to understand the home’s structure and work through it systematically.
Systematic behavior makes premium robots more useful than older ones.
You’ll appreciate the difference intelligent mapping makes if you’ve seen a cheap robot hit the same chair for five minutes.
Mapping isn’t just drawing a floor plan
A good robot vacuum map isn’t simply a picture of your house.
It’s the basis for the cleaning strategy.
After mapping, you can identify rooms, divide spaces, create no-go zones, and clean specific areas. You don’t have to clean the whole house every time.
You can send the robot to the kitchen after dinner, for example.
If the living room needs attention but the bedrooms are already clean, you can clean only the living room.
It’s a small convenience that changes how often you use the robot.
The Dreame works the same way. That mapping system helps the robot plan routes with multiple rooms and floors.
This is where I think both machines are considerably more useful than their physical appearance suggests. They’re not just autonomous vacuums. They’re mobile cleaning systems using a digital floor plan.
Roborock’s advantage is its mature software
If I had to choose one area where Roborock feels particularly polished, it would be the software experience.
The Qrevo S Pro uses Roborock’s mapping and SmartPlan approach to determine how it should clean different areas of the home. The system can take room type, flooring and cleaning requirements into account, reducing the amount of manual adjustment required.
The app also gives you a substantial amount of control.
You can create routines for specific rooms.
You can set intensity.
You can designate areas that should be avoided.

You can create custom jobs when needed.
All this information helps the robot navigate.
You’re not just telling it where to go. You’re giving it a set of rules for how it should behave when it gets there.
Roborock’s software refinement shows.
The Qrevo S Pro generally feels like a product that has been designed around the user’s mental model: “This is my kitchen, this is my bedroom, and I want this area cleaned twice.”
That’s much easier than thinking for coordinates or manually drawing routes.
The Dreame has very capable obstacle avoidance
The L40 Ultra Gen 2 has a sophisticated obstacle-avoidance system too.
It uses 3D structured-light technology to identify objects, not just invisible walls.
This matters in modern homes with many non-permanent objects.
A chair might be pulled away from a table.
A pair of shoes might be left in a hallway.
A phone charging cable might be lying on the floor.
A child’s toy might appear in the middle of the living room.

The L40 Ultra Gen 2’s obstacle detection helps households that aren’t very tidy. If you’ve children, pets or simply a tendency to leave shoes and objects around the house, the Dreame’s ability to identify obstacles can make a meaningful difference.
Neither robot sees perfectly
It’s important not to exaggerate what obstacle avoidance can do.
Neither robot has human-like judgment.
Some objects won’t be recognized correctly.
Thin cables are tough for robot vacuums.
Small objects can be a problem.
Dark or unusual objects may behave differently depending on their shape, position and the sensor environment.
I wouldn’t think sophisticated obstacle avoidance means you can leave clutter everywhere.
The robot works best with a fairly clear floor.
The Dreame and Roborock are more forgiving if you forget something.
That’s a key difference.
Furniture navigation
Both robots handle normal furniture well.
Tables and chairs aren’t always obstacles. A smart robot must understand it can move between chair legs and clean under furniture.
LiDAR honestly helps considerably here because the robot can establish the geometry of the environment rather than simply reacting when its bumper touches something.
The circular shape helps too.
The Qrevo S Pro and L40 Ultra Gen 2 can rotate and reposition themselves without needing a large turning radius. When they encounter a chair leg or another narrow obstacle, they can make small adjustments and continue along their planned route.
This results in less chaotic behavior.
Cleaning paths
Both use systematic cleaning paths.
This shows the value of mapping.
Instead of spending most of its battery randomly traversing already-cleaned areas, the robot can work through sections methodically.
This route might not look logical to humans. Robots account for furniture, boundaries, docking, obstacles, and cleaning head size.
But the behavior is more deliberate.
The Qrevo S Pro benefits from Roborock’s route-planning algorithms. This robot generally has a clear sense of where it has been and where it still needs to go.
The Dreame’s Pathfinder system does this too.
Neither robot needs guidance on every square foot.
That’s the key point.
Multi-floor support
For larger homes, multi-floor support becomes important.
Neither robot should be thought of as restricted to a single map.
Both can maintain information about different floors, which is useful if you physically move the robot between levels.
There is, however, a practical limitation: these robots don’t magically teleport themselves between floors.
If the dock is downstairs, someone still needs to get the robot upstairs.

The Qrevo S Pro has an advantage in integrating mapping information into the cleaning experience. Roborock’s software has been developed around room-based cleaning and scheduling for years.
The L40 Ultra Gen 2 feels slightly more aggressive for physical navigation. Its obstacle avoidance and sensor package are designed to identify what’s on the floor.
This difference is:
Roborock is better at understanding the house. Dreame is slightly better at understanding what’s currently sitting inside the house.
That’s a simplification, but it’s useful.
Getting around pets is important
Advanced navigation also benefits pet owners.
Inexpensive robots often struggle with everyday objects like a pet’s water or food bowl, or even a favorite toy.
Identifying common household objects is what makes the L40 Ultra Gen 2’s object recognition. So valuable, as it can then attempt to avoid them.
The Qrevo S Pro’s strong obstacle avoidance system allows it to navigate around typical pet equipment with ease. And it’s perfectly capable of doing so.
Neither is suitable around every situation involving pets.
When you touch it, a lightweight toy can move.
Spills can happen with a water bowl.
The robot maps the room. And then a pet can move an object.
Creating restricted areas around potential problem sources is still the best approach.
Navigation at night
LiDAR-based systems have another advantage in that they’re not limited to using visible light to determine a room’s shape.
It’s useful for running the robot at night.
You can switch off some lights while the robot is cleaning, it’s not necessary to have every light in the house on.
Daily cleaning is most valuable when it’s scheduled for times when everyone is asleep.

The ultimate goal isn’t to own a robot vacuum that can be controlled remotely, and that’s important.
What it means to own one is that it doesn’t need to be controlled very often.
A difference exists.
I still don’t have complete automation if I’m opening the app every morning and manually selecting rooms; it’s only somewhat convenient.
This robot’s ability to clean the kitchen after dinner, steer clear of restricted areas, and return to the dock when done, is what I consider genuine automation.
These machines come very close to that experience.
What navigates better?
The comparison is very close in this category.
The Qrevo S Pro’s software is more mature and its mapping is easier to use. It’s an intuitive app, with great room-based control and navigation that feels really polished.
The L40 Ultra Gen 2’s 3D structured-light system gives it a leg up in detecting obstacles. Object recognition is also particularly useful on floors with unpredictable objects, and it adapts well physically.
Your home is relatively tidy and you want a navigation and mapping experience that’s exceptionally polished, Roborock is the way to go.
Your home has toys, shoes, cables, pet equipment, and other stuff on the floor, the Dreame is a good choice.
Final navigation verdict
Navigation and mapping on the Roborock Qrevo S Pro earn it a 9.4 out of 10 from me.
I give the Dreame L40 Ultra Gen 2 a 9.5 out of 10 rating.
It’s tiny.
The Qrevo S Pro is a more refined navigation platform, knowing how to turn floor plans into practical cleaning routines, and it makes this intelligence easy to use through its software.
Everyday life can be messy, and the L40 Ultra Gen 2 seems to handle it a bit better. What makes a difference is its obstacle-recognition system, which identifies objects instead of just reacting to them. This matters in homes where floors aren’t always cleared before cleaning.
In 2026, I think robot-vacuum navigation should be like these two, they’re what it should look like.
I map the house once.
Rooms and restricted areas are established by you.
A cleaning routine is set.
The robot gets on with the job then.
What matters most is how well a robot navigates, and that’s reflected in how little you need to step in when it’s lost, stuck, or repeating the same cleaning path over and over. It’s not about the map’s appearance in the app or the number of sensors on the spec sheet. The true test of navigation intelligence is how rarely you’ve to intervene.
Both the Qrevo S Pro and L40 Ultra Gen 2 excel in navigation. The Roborock’s software experience is slightly more refined, but the Dreame’s physical obstacle-awareness system is more convincing. Either is a big improvement over basic navigation for most homes; however, for households with lots of clutter, pets, or unpredictability, the L40 Ultra Gen 2 has a slight edge.
Vacuuming Performance
Vacuuming performance is the category where marketing departments usually have the easiest job. Add a big suction number. And a dramatic photo, and it seems like you’ve figured out which robot is better.
The Roborock Qrevo S Pro has a claimed suction of up to 18,500Pa. The Dreame L40 Ultra Gen 2 claims a much higher maximum suction of 25,000Pa.
That’s a big difference on paper.
But it’s not that simple in practice.
Suction alone doesn’t clean a floor with a robot vacuum. The brush loosens debris, airflow carries it in, the robot stays in contact with the floor, and its navigation system covers the dirty area. Agitation is especially important on carpet. On hard floors, airflow and intake design can matter more.
The Dreame has a stronger spec, but does that extra power mean a cleaner home.

Yes, but there’s a catch.

This is why I wouldn’t say the Dreame is “35 percent better” simply because 25,000Pa is roughly 35 percent higher than 18,500Pa.
Vacuum performance isn’t directly proportional to the suction power advertised.
Think of the extra suction as additional capacity.
The Dreame has more power when it’s needed.
The Roborock has enough power for most normal conditions.

Which one would I choose for daily cleaning?
I’d trust both.

I’d set a schedule and let it do its job.

The Qrevo S Pro is very capable overall.
The L40 Ultra Gen 2 is more aggressive.
And if vacuuming performance is the single most important factor in the buying decision, I’d choose the Dreame. The Qrevo remains an excellent choice, but the L40’s combination of higher suction, better perimeter reach and stronger hair-handling capability makes it the more convincing vacuuming machine overall.
Mopping Capability
Vacuuming is where robot cleaners have become genuinely good; mopping is where the Roborock Qrevo S Pro and Dreame L40 Ultra Gen 2 feel like a different generation of appliance altogether.

For open areas of hard flooring, the Qrevo S Pro is good enough for automated maintenance cleaning.
You can schedule it to mop regularly, let the dock wash the pads and return to a clean floor without thinking about the process very much.
For a robot that replaces a traditional mop, I’d choose the L40 Ultra Gen 2.
Its advantage isn’t transforming a robot into a human cleaner.
It doesn’t.
Dreame addressed weaknesses like limited edge reach, insufficient scrubbing, and hygiene problems with dirty mop pads in the dock.
The Qrevo S Pro is the cleaner I’d describe as excellent at automated mopping.
The L40 Ultra Gen 2 is more complete at automated floor cleaning.
This is an important distinction.
Either machine can make a difference for homes with hardwood, tile, or sealed hard flooring, reducing manual mopping. The Dreame’s extending mop system is stronger for homes with edges, kitchen flooring, pets, or untouched floor strips around rooms.
This decides the category for me.
The Roborock shows a robot can mop well.
The Dreame asks where robot mopping falls short, then adds mechanical hardware to address those weaknesses.
This is why the L40 Ultra Gen 2 wins.
Maintenance & Cleaning
To keep a house clean with minimal effort, many people buy a premium robot vacuum. It’s simple: the robot handles vacuuming and mopping, then goes back to its dock where it takes care of maintenance on its own.
Both the Roborock Qrevo S Pro and Dreame L40 Ultra Gen 2 are like that too.
Self-cleaning” is not the same as “maintenance-free.
Both machines need attention, but the difference is they’ve automated a lot of the repetitive. And messy work. You no longer have to empty a small dustbin after every cleaning, wash a mop by hand, or remember to recharge the robot, the machine can handle those tasks itself. Occasional maintenance is still necessary, though.
Dreame’s automation capabilities give it a slight edge, but Roborock makes up for it with its simplicity, making this comparison particularly interesting because both models handle things differently.
The dock has a big impact, it changes everything
A basic robot vacuum’s dock is essentially a charging station.
The dock, with these two machines, is essentially a second appliance.
The robot gets charged, and this system also collects dust, it washes and dries the mop pads, managing both clean and dirty water.
Daily maintenance is a lot less because of that.
The Qrevo S Pro’s cleaning cycle ends with a return to its dock, where it automatically empties its internal dustbin. Also, the dock is equipped to wash the mop pads and then dry them using warm air.
Dreame has taken its dock-cleaning system further with the L40 Ultra Gen 2, building on the same basic philosophy.
It’s dirty because the dock gets dirty itself.
Cleaning the robot is just the start. The area that holds the dirty mop water should also be kept clean.
Dreame’s approach is particularly focused on reducing residue in the mop-washing area; both manufacturers get that this matters.
Emptying the dustbin
Premium robot vacuums make it so we don’t have to empty dustbins manually, that’s one chore they’ve pretty much done away with.
The robot’s internal dustbin is small, but it doesn’t need emptying after each use. When it returns to the dock, the dock takes over; its suction system moves the debris to a larger dust bag.
The Qrevo S Pro’s dock has a large disposable dust bag that’s rated to last around 65 days, give or take, depending on how it’s used.
It’s rated for about 100 days under the manufacturer’s testing assumptions, and the L40 Ultra Gen 2 comes with a 3.2-liter dust bag.
The numbers are great, but it’s best to view them as rough estimates rather than set-in-stone promises; they might not be entirely achievable.
Living alone in a relatively clean apartment, you might get close.
If multiple pets and people are present, along with carpets that produce a lot of dust and hair, and the carpets generate lots of dust, the bag fills up much faster.
Replacing the bag monthly instead of every three months is still a lot less work than emptying a robot’s small dustbin after each use, and that’s a big difference.
Replace the dust bag
Replacing the dust bag sounds worse than it’s, and this maintenance job is relatively easy to do.
The bag gets removed from the dock and replaced when it’s full.
The collected dust stays contained which is a big advantage.
People who dislike emptying conventional bagless vacuum cleaners will find this particularly useful, as it prevents the release of a small cloud of dust back into the room when emptying.
The Qrevo S Pro and L40 Ultra Gen 2 both simplify this process, making it relatively hands-off.
It’s still costing something, though.
Disposable bags are consumables.
Replacing bags will be a factor in the cost of owning either robot long-term.
A premium robot vacuum differs from a conventional bagless upright in several hidden ways, and that’s one of them.
Time is saved with the robot, and some of this convenience is due to the purchase of consumables.
Mop washing
These machines really set themselves apart from cheaper robot mops here.
The Qrevo S Pro has a dock that automatically washes its mop pads.

No wet, dirty microfiber pads need to be removed from the robot each evening and taken to the sink.
You don’t have to do the repetitive part for the machine handles it.
You’ll find this especially helpful when running the robot often.
Manually washing those pads after every run would be a real hassle if it mops the kitchen daily.
With automatic washing, the process becomes something that’s largely forgotten.
The pads require occasional inspection and replacement, and the daily washing chore is no longer necessary, it’s eliminated.
Cleaning with hot water
Both docks use heated water to clean the mop pads.
Because the pads don’t just collect dust.
They’re exposed to greasy kitchen residue, food particles, muddy footprints and other substances that cold water may not remove as well.
The Qrevo S Pro can wash its mop pads with high-temperature water, and the Dreame L40 Ultra Gen 2 does too.
This doesn’t mean the mop pads emerge from the dock clinically sterile.
They don’t.
This process is better at breaking down typical robot mop grime.
So the pads should stay fresher for longer.
Drying mop pads
Drying is arguably just as important as washing.
Unpleasant odors can develop in a wet mop pad left in a closed dock.
It can also remain damp for hours before the next cleaning cycle.

Dirt still accumulates, even with automatic washboard cleaning.

The same advice applies to both machines.

The tank for clean water works the other way around.
Clean water is supplied by the dock to the robot. So it can keep its mop pads wet during cleaning.
You refill the tank when it’s empty.
The frequency also depends heavily on the home.
Occasional mopping in a small apartment might require surprisingly little attention.
Extensive hard flooring in a large house uses substantially more water with frequent mopping.
Both systems benefit by not requiring you don’t need to refill the robot a small water reservoir each time.
It acts as a larger reservoir.
This makes automated cleaning more practical.
Main-brush maintenance
No matter how advanced the robot becomes, attention is still needed for the main brush.
The biggest problem is hair.
Long hair can wrap around the roller, particularly around the ends.
Qrevo S Pro has an all-rubber main brush is easy to inspect and clean with a design that reduces tangling.
Dreame also offers an advantage through its TriCut Brush 2.0 system designed to deal with long hair by cutting it into smaller pieces.

Wheels are easy to overlook since they’re hidden underneath the robot.
They’re in constant contact with the floor.
Hair, dust and small particles can accumulate around them.
Sensors on both robots need to stay clean.
LiDAR navigation, obstacle avoidance, and surface detection depend on sensors functioning correctly.
A fingerprint or dust won’t necessarily stop the machine but contaminated sensors can reduce performance.
A quick wipe with a dry or lightly damp cloth is usually enough during routine maintenance.
I prefer accessible designs for this reason.
Mop-pad replacement
Mop pads are consumable.
They wear out, no matter how good the washing system is.
Dirt gets collected.

The main roller will need to be inspected more frequently if you’ve a shedding dog or cat.
Ergonomics & Usability
Robot vacuums should make life easier, but there’s an important distinction between a robot that’s technically autonomous and one that is genuinely pleasant to live with. A machine can have excellent suction, sophisticated navigation and an impressive collection of sensors, but can still be annoying when the app is confusing, the dock is awkward to use, or maintenance takes too much effort.
The Roborock Qrevo S Pro and Dreame L40 Ultra Gen 2 are both designed around the idea that you should interact with them as little as possible. Once they’re installed and configured, most of the cleaning can happen automatically. This real test of ergonomics isn’t about the robot’s comfort in the classical sense. It’s about how the whole system fits into daily life.
Both work well, but their approaches to usability differ.
How big the robots are
They’re not hard to fit in.
The Qrevo S Pro and L40 Ultra Gen 2 are both relatively compact circular robots, they can go under many sofas, beds, and cabinets.
That’s an important ergonomic advantage.
You don’t have to carry the robot around the house every time you want to clean underneath furniture. Once you’ve placed the dock in a suitable location, the robot can take care of most of that work itself.
The circular shape also pretty means there are no protruding corners that constantly catch on furniture.
This robot can rotate in place, approach obstacles and reposition itself without requiring much floor space.
However, the dock is a different story.
Both multifunction docks occupy a meaningful amount of floor and vertical wall space. That’s unavoidable because the dock isn’t simply charging the robot. It’s housing water tanks, a dust collection system, pumps, washing components and drying hardware.
Before buying either machine, I’d measure the intended location carefully.
You need room for the dock itself, enough clearance for the robot to approach it and sufficient access to remove the clean- and dirty-water tanks.
A technically perfect dock placement can become frustrating if you’ve to squeeze between furniture every time you need to empty the dirty-water tank.
Installing the system
Initial setup is relatively straightforward for both.
You’ll need to position the dock, install the appropriate components, connect the robot to the app and allow it to map the home.
This is more involved than plugging in a conventional vacuum, obviously, but it’s a one-time investment.
The important thing is to get the dock position right.
A robot vacuum depends on returning accurately to its base, and the dock needs a reasonably clear approach.
I wouldn’t hide it behind furniture simply because the dock looks better there.
A robot vacuum is an appliance. It’s better to give it a practical location where it can work reliably than to make it disappear visually and then wonder why docking occasionally becomes difficult.
How usable the apps are
Roborock has always been strong here.
The Qrevo S Pro is controlled primarily through the Roborock app, and the overall experience is well organized.
Once the map has been created, you can identify rooms, select areas for cleaning, adjust vacuuming and mopping settings, create schedules and establish restrictions.
That important thing is that the app doesn’t require you to understand the robot’s underlying technology.
You don’t have to think about LiDAR.
You don’t need to understand route-planning algorithms.
You simply see a representation of the house and tell the robot what you want cleaned.
That’s good interface design.
The L40 Ultra Gen 2 uses Dreame’s app ecosystem and offers similarly extensive control.
You can manage rooms, cleaning modes, schedules, water usage, suction levels and other settings.
The Dreame app has plenty of options, although I find its interface can feel slightly more feature-heavy.
That’s not necessarily bad.
If you’re the kind of person who enjoys fine-tuning a machine, the extra controls are useful.
If you just want to press “clean” and forget about it, the more options can feel like more information than you need.
An ideal user experience
The best robot vacuum is the one you stop thinking about.
It’s true, though it sounds strange.
You don’t want to wonder if the robot has finished.
You don’t want to rescue it from under the sofa, either.
You also don’t want to tell it which room to clean each morning.
You don’t want to wash the mop pads.
You don’t want to empty a tiny dustbin.
You don’t want to troubleshoot it every few days.
The Qrevo S Pro gets close to this ideal.
With your map and cleaning preferences set, it can follow a schedule with little interaction.
The L40 Ultra Gen 2 is similar, and its automation can make it feel more independent.
Voice and remote controls
Both robots can be integrated into a smart-home setup for added convenience.
The app will likely remain the primary interface for many people.
That’s perfectly reasonable.
You’re more likely to open the app to schedule a cleaning or change a setting than walk over to the robot.
The robot’s physical controls are limited intentionally.
That’s the right decision.
It doesn’t need a control panel like a washing machine’s.
Most of its intelligence is in the software.
Room-specific cleaning
One of the most useful features is the ability to clean specific rooms.
This is much more practical than simply choosing “whole house.”
Imagine you’ve just had breakfast.
Crumbs are in the kitchen.
You don’t want it to spend an hour vacuuming clean bedrooms.

Usability on multiple floors
Homes with multiple stories have a practical limitation.
Neither can climb stairs.
You may need to carry it upstairs to clean another level.
Once upstairs, both systems can work with separate maps.
It’s easier than starting the mapping process from scratch each time.
The dock stays on one floor, which is a downside.
It can clean another floor but won’t have the same workflow unless the dock is there.
This isn’t an issue for single-story homes.
For a two- or three-story home, I’d consider this before buying.
Ergonomics. And water tanks
You’ll regularly interact with the clean- and dirty-water tanks, which are among the few physical components.
Both are designed to be removable.
That’s important because a full water tank can be surprisingly heavy.
Good handles and sensible placement make a big difference.
The Qrevo S Pro’s tank system is straightforward.
The L40 Ultra Gen 2’s is similarly accessible.
But the biggest ergonomic issue isn’t the tank design itself. It’s remembering the dirty-water tank has dirty mop water in it.
You don’t want to find out after several days.
Emptying it regularly is one of the small rituals that comes with owning a self-washing robot.
Dustbins vs dust bags
Both machines have great automatic dust collection from a usability standpoint.
That robot’s internal dustbin is small because it doesn’t need to hold weeks of debris.
The dock moves the dirt to a much larger bag.
You don’t have to touch the collected dust often.
This is particularly appealing for allergy-sensitive households because the dust stays contained.
But you need replacement bags.
This is a convenience vs consumables decision.
I’d choose convenience.
Handling mop pads
That same principle applies to mop pads.

This is a big usability advantage.
You can finish cleaning without touching the mop.

Noise during operation

The vacuum itself produces a noticeable hum, especially at higher suction levels but it’s not comparable to the loud, sustained noise of a powerful upright vacuum cleaner being pushed around the house.
Docks are different, though.

A sensor may need cleaning.
That water tank may be empty.
A component may need attention.
What matters is how clearly the robot communicates the issue.
Both systems provide notifications and app-based information that can help identify what’s happening.
It’s better than finding a silent robot under a sofa with a flashing warning light you can’t decipher.
The more information the robot gives, the easier it’s to fix.
Navigation and usability are connected;
Good navigation improves more than cleaning.
It also reduces user intervention.
Each successful obstacle avoidance basically means one less rescue operation.
Each correct room recognition means one less manual command.
Each successful dock return means one less problem.
That’s why I don’t separate navigation and usability as sharply as a spec sheet might.
A robot with great navigation is easier to live with.
The Qrevo S Pro greatly benefits from Roborock’s mature navigation software.
The L40 Ultra Gen 2 benefits from sophisticated obstacle recognition.
Both are easier to live with than less capable robots.
What feels easier to use?
I think someone who’s never had a robot vacuum before would get used to the Qrevo S Pro pretty fast.
Experience is logical overall.
Map the house.
Set rooms.
Choose your cleaning preferences.
Schedules are created.
Let it work.
The Dreame isn’t difficult either; it just exposes more functionality.
It’s also slightly more complicated, but that makes it potentially more powerful.
Fine control is a positive for enthusiasts who like it.
Simplicity is what makes the Roborock appealing to those who just want a machine that cleans the floor.
Ergonomics in daily life
You don’t physically push either of these robots, which is their biggest ergonomic advantage after the initial setup.
It’s the entire point, and that’s what makes it. So obvious.
It doesn’t move back and forth.
No bending down to reach underneath furniture is necessary.
That means no carrying a heavy vacuum from room to room.
No power cable is needed to follow you around.
There is no wall outlet to be found.
Physical work is handled by the robot.
Mostly, you deal with water tanks, dust bags, and the occasional maintenance task.
Using a different type of vacuum is a lot unlike using an upright vacuum cleaner.
For convenience, I’d pick a specific machine.
This is extremely close.
I give the Roborock Qrevo S Pro a score of 9.4 out of 10 when it comes to ergonomics and usability.
I’d rate the Dreame L40 Ultra Gen 2 a 9.3 out of 10.
The Roborock’s software and controls have a slight edge for intuitiveness, and its overall system is pretty straightforward, which gives it a narrow win.
The Dreame remains excellent, and it’s arguably more automated in certain areas, but the large feature set also makes it feel somewhat complicated.
That isn’t necessarily a problem for a technically minded user.
The Roborock has the edge for someone looking for an appliance that’s essentially an invisible household assistant.
Verdict is final
What matters isn’t that these machines can be controlled from a smartphone.
Many appliances can do that too.
You can set them up and establish a cleaning routine, then they’re pretty much out of sight, out of mind.
The Qrevo S Pro does well in this area and it’s particularly successful at this.
Navigation is something it does well, and its app has been around long enough to be solid.
The L40 Ultra Gen 2 has similar capabilities and it also adds some automation features. It’s a bit more complicated due to its advanced cleaning mechanisms, but these mechanisms reduce some limitations of traditional robot vacuums.
I think the Roborock edges out the competition, usability goes beyond the number of features, it’s also about how easily they fit into daily life, and that’s where it shines.
The Dreame has a lot of capability.
The Roborock makes managing that capability feel slightly easier.
Good ergonomics should make technology fade into the background and the benefits should still be clear.
Both machines need some human attention, but they’re a big step up from traditional cleaning equipment. With an upright vacuum and manual mop, you’re doing all the work, carrying, pushing, and stopping to empty or wash them. In contrast, automated systems like these take care of routine cleaning tasks, and you’re just doing some occasional maintenance.
Everyday ownership matters more than a slight boost in suction power.
Pet-Friendliness
For pet owners, a robot vacuum is more practical than luxurious. Dogs and cats create a unique mess that’s hard to manage manually, as it accumulates continuously. And it’s constant.
There’s fur on the carpet.
Hair underneath the sofa.
And dust is around the food bowls,
There’s kibble in the kitchen,
Paw prints are on the hard floors,
And litter’s around the cat’s tray,
And then there’s whatever your pet decides to bring in from outside.
That’s where the Roborock Qrevo S Pro and Dreame L40 Ultra Gen 2 come in. Both are designed for frequent automated cleaning and have the necessary suction power, brush systems, and navigation intelligence to handle everyday pet debris.
But they’re not equal in every pet-related task.
The Dreame L40 Ultra Gen 2 has hardware advantages that attract pet owners, but the Qrevo S Pro has a simpler, more mature cleaning system.
I think the Dreame wins, but it depends on your pet and how much hair you’re dealing with.
The daily pet-hair problem
Pet hair’s different from regular dust.
Dust settles,
But hair moves around.
A dog walking around can leave fur from the living room to the kitchen. A cat can shed tiny hairs onto carpets, furniture and hard floors without you noticing.
By the time you see the hair, there’s often considerably more of it than you thought.
That’s where automated vacuuming helps.
You can have the robot clean daily instead of waiting for the floor to get furry.
The Qrevo S Pro and L40 Ultra Gen 2 are great for this.
The Qrevo’s suction is enough for everyday pet hair, especially on hard floors.

Hard floors are easier for both.
